The only discouraging sign from their encounters was the time Mitchell mentioned that he was not very fond of children. Ana just told herself that maybe he would feel differently if he had children of his own, if...IF... she decided try to venture down that road with him. And Ana still couldn't stop herself getting those goose bumps.
They had not had another date, but that was okay with Ana. She didn't want to get serious with anyone, after all. So Ana continued to paint, and she saved every cent she could. And she continued to dream about starting her family.
Not much time has passed since that steamy date, and to Ana that night seems like yesterday. But soon Ana began to suspect her nausea and a couple of other minor symptoms she had been experiencing might mean she would be starting her family sooner than she thought.
Her immediate reaction is, of course, joy. She is finally going to have a child! She can't help the smile that spreads across her face, even if it is a bit of a crazy looking smile. A baby! A BABY!!!!
The initial warm and fuzzy feelings are rapidly extinguished by a heavy dose of reality.
She thinks of Mitchell and his distaste of children. For the first time she thinks maybe she had been a bit foolish to let her hormones take the lead on the night of their date. All she could do is hope he takes the news well. She would not be demanding anything from him. Mitchell's level of involvement will be entirely up to him.
Knowing she needs to tell Mitchell as soon as possible, she decides to invite him over later that day.
And if he thinks it strange that Ana is standing in the kitchen eating rather than sitting at the table, he doesn't mention it. Truthfully she is so nervous that she can hardly get the food down. Several times she catches herself rambling and breaks off her sentence awkwardly. Still Mitchell doesn't mention it. Does he really not notice or does he possibly suspect something's up.
When he manages to dry his tears, Mitchell look at her in disgust. Without any sign of ever having cared for Ana at all, Mitchell says, "When I came over tonight, I thought you were going to want to have the talk.... about our relationship. And I was prepared to tell you I'm not looking for a relationship. But I guess you got your hooks into me before I could break things off."
He leaves quickly after that. Departing with a nasty comment about how she had planned this all along to get money from him and refusing to believe her when she said she didn't want his money. "Fat chance that'll happen!" And with that his is out the door.
Ana just can't believe the intensity of his negative reaction. How could have she been so attracted to him just a few hours ago? He holds little to no appeal to her now. She goes to bed that night thinking that was pretty much the last she would be seeing of Mitchell. So she was in for a pretty big surprise come the next morning.
With a mean look in his eye, he says, "Are you even sure it's mine? There's no way your belly could have gotten that big this fast. I bet you were already pregnant when we met. What did your baby daddy kick you out? So you went looking for some sucker to leech off of in a new town?"
Completely shocked doesn't even begin to describe how Ana felt hearing these words.
Ana is nearly as mean, telling him she wished she had never met him; telling him that he wasn't even fit to be a father; throwing every insult she could think of at him.
A bout of morning sickness hits her during the middle of their fight.
The conversation calms down a bit, but they are far from making up. This whole encounter has obviously given Ana a headache. And when Mitchell leaves, she knows without a doubt she will not be having a romantic relationship with him anymore. She is determined to remain civil with him from now on though, for the sake of her unborn child.
And she has plenty to do before her due date.
